Punta Sur Eco Beach Park is a protected natural area at the southern tip of Cozumel. The park operator describes a reserve of more than 1,000 hectares with coastal habitat, lagoon systems, beaches and wildlife. With the Celarain Lighthouse, a navigation museum, observation points and a long Caribbean shoreline, it is one of the island’s most varied self-guided day trips.

A nature reserve, not a beach club
The environment, not organized entertainment, is the main attraction here. Distances between the entrance, lighthouse, lagoon zone and beach facilities are significant, so plan transport, sun exposure and timing as part of the visit.
Nature, lagoons and wildlife
Punta Sur’s wetlands support birds and other animals, including crocodiles that can sometimes be observed from designated areas. Sightings are never guaranteed; stay on marked routes, respect barriers and never feed or approach animals. Binoculars add value for birdwatchers, and a camera with moderate zoom captures the landscape from safe observation points.
The lagoon system defines the reserve. The operator has listed a scenic tower and a lagoon boat experience among the park features; availability can vary, so avoid building a tight itinerary around a single activity.
Celarain Lighthouse and cultural features
The Celarain Lighthouse is Punta Sur’s best-known landmark. The site also includes a navigation museum and a small Maya vestige, linking the natural setting with Cozumel’s maritime and regional history. Views from the lighthouse area show the contrast between lagoon, low vegetation and open sea. Climbing may not suit everyone, so visitors with mobility, balance or heat-sensitivity concerns can ask staff what can be seen without stairs or long walks.
Beach time and optional activities
Punta Sur has white-sand beach areas, but Caribbean conditions change quickly: follow flags and staff guidance, use life vests where required and keep children within reach. Reef and sea-fan environments are sensitive, so do not stand on coral or remove natural material.
Beach chairs, hammocks, restrooms, showers and changing facilities are listed among the park amenities. Food service, snorkel equipment, paddling activities and massages may be available at extra cost. Bring a towel, water, reef-conscious sun protection and a change of clothes; some stretches have limited shade.
Planning your day
Start with the lighthouse and lagoon areas if those are priorities, then leave unhurried time for the beach. Plan several hours inside the park. During stormy or windy periods, individual activities may pause even if land areas remain open.
Getting there
Punta Sur is far from downtown San Miguel and the ferry terminal. Independent travelers generally need a rental vehicle, a taxi arrangement or an organized excursion. Standard taxis may not wait on site, so settle the return pickup before being dropped off. Mainland visitors must add the passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen, and cruise passengers should keep the ship’s time zone and all-aboard deadline in mind with a generous buffer.

Before you book
Admission prices, opening hours, operating days and activity availability can change. Check the current price, schedule and what general admission includes with the park operator before arranging a long taxi ride or ferry connection.
Frequently asked questions
What does general admission include?
The operator lists access to the Celarain Lighthouse, navigation museum, scenic tower, Maya vestige, nature areas, beaches and several visitor facilities.

Is snorkeling always available?
No. Equipment, guided options and safe water access depend on current operations and sea conditions.
Is the park suitable for young children?
Families can enjoy it, but distances, heat, stairs and open-water areas require planning and close supervision.
