Choose by the day you want, not only the destination photo. Isla Mujeres is a natural choice for a ferry-and-beach outing; Tulum pairs a coastal archaeological visit with Riviera Maya time; Chichén Itzá deserves a long, early-start cultural day; Cozumel makes most sense if the island itself is a priority and you are comfortable with a longer multi-leg journey. None is automatically included in your resort rate.
The best day trip also depends on where your hotel is. A guest in the Hotel Zone has different ferry and road logistics from someone in Costa Mujeres or Puerto Morelos. Use our Cancun and Puerto Morelos guides to orient yourself before buying an excursion.
Compare the shape of your day
| Destination | What the day involves | Plan around |
|---|---|---|
| Isla Mujeres | Drive to a departure pier, ferry, beaches and island time. | Terminal location and return sailing. |
| Tulum | Road trip, archaeological site and possibly a separate beach stop. | Entry hours and travel time in both directions. |
| Chichén Itzá | A longer inland journey to the Maya archaeological zone. | Early departure, heat and site access. |
| Cozumel | Road transfer to Playa del Carmen plus a ferry crossing. | Two transport legs and the final return ferry. |
Isla Mujeres: the easiest island-focused plan
For a flexible day on the water, Isla Mujeres often fits a Cancun stay well. Ultramar lists the passenger ferry routes, including Puerto Juárez and Hotel Zone departures. Check the current schedule, the exact terminal and your return options before booking transportation: “Cancun ferry” can mean more than one pier.

You can join an organized sailing tour or take a passenger ferry and plan the island independently. Compare the total cost, pickup point, lunch and time ashore. Our Isla Mujeres travel guide covers beaches and resort choices if you want a longer island stay.
Tulum and Chichén Itzá: two very different ruin days
Tulum combines an archaeological site with a coastal setting. The official INAH visitor page is the place to confirm current opening hours and entry conditions before setting off. A Tulum day can include another stop, but a beach club, cenote or guided visit changes both the time and the price.
Chichén Itzá is a more ambitious inland outing from Cancun. Verify current entry details with INAH, leave enough room for traffic and breaks, and ask a tour operator exactly what its price includes. Treat a guide, entrance fee, lunch and a cenote as separate line items unless the offer names them.

Cozumel: an island day with extra travel legs
The usual route from Cancun goes overland to Playa del Carmen and then by passenger ferry to Cozumel. Ultramar lists this crossing. If you have only one excursion day, compare the round-trip logistics with Isla Mujeres before you commit. Our Playa del Carmen and Cozumel guides make the two sides of that journey easier to plan.
Protect the resort time you paid for
An all-inclusive stay can be excellent value when you actually use the property. If you want multiple excursions, consider whether a different trip length or hotel location makes more sense. Confirm cancellation terms, weather policies and pickup location for each operator. For the airport leg, see transportation from Cancun airport; your excursion pickup is a separate arrangement.
Frequently asked questions
Can I visit Cozumel without changing hotels?
Yes, but account for the road journey, ferry in each direction and island activities. Check the last return crossing before finalizing a day plan.
Are archaeological tickets included in tours?
Some operators include them and others do not. Request an itemized description and verify official site information before paying.
